Wollongong

Wollongong
/ˈwʊləngɒŋ/ (say 'wooluhngong)

noun
a city on the South Coast of NSW, in the Illawarra district.
{? Australian Aboriginal}
Wollongong lies in territory traditionally inhabited by the Dharawal people. George Bass and Matthew Flinders investigated the coast in 1796, and Charles Throsby and James Meehan explored the district in 1815. Land grants were made in 1816 and a garrison was sent here in 1826. Wollongong was the district's main cedar port from around 1826, and the first coal was loaded in 1829. Town lots were surveyed by Thomas Mitchell in 1834 and the town grew as a dairying and agricultural centre. Steamer communication with Sydney began in 1839. The Bulli Pass route was explored in 1844, and opened to vehicles in 1868. When the coalmine opened at Mt Keira in 1849, coal was shipped from Wollongong harbour, but Port Kembla became the dominant port from the 1890s. Rapid development followed the establishment of iron and steel and other industrial plants at Port Kembla from the early 20th century. Wollongong was declared a city in 1942, and became the city of Greater Wollongong in 1947. The mid-1980s saw a decline in employment in the iron and steel and associated industries and the closure of some coalmines. In recent times there has been a growth in industries such as telecommunications, tourism and education (the University of Wollongong was founded in 1975).
